The publication was published on the occasion of the artist’s first retrospective in the Netherlands:
Folkert de Jong - Circle of Trust, Selected Works 2001 - 2009
Curated by Mark Wilson and Sue-an van der Zijpp at the Groninger Museum in Groningen, Netherlands.
Folkert de Jong (*Alkmaar 1972) is known for his life-size sculptural groups made of industrial materials. Using Styrofoam and polyurethane foam from the petrochemical industry—materials atypical for art—De Jong creates remarkable and grotesque worlds depicting power, violence, catastrophe, and other disturbing aspects of human existence. Fascinated by the caverns of the human soul, the artist draws the viewer into a world where the bizarre meets the fragile, with a sense of a post-apocalyptic future.
