Inspired by the unmistakable energy of the Woods Art Institute, the textile artwork “1006” brings together numerous sketch-like impressions of the arboretum and sculpture park in a seemingly inextricable web. What at first glance appears to be an abstract, random chaos or a turbulent interplay of black and white unfolds upon closer inspection into a multi-layered search image: a web of countless details, elements, and symbols hidden throughout the WAI, waiting to be discovered.
The two-color jacquard knit with closed edges shows the motif inverted on the reverse, changing the perception of the artwork depending on the viewing direction and creating new meanings and effects. The title also refers to this interplay between the contemporary and the timeless, the visible and the invisible.
About the artist:
DAVI.IN is a multidisciplinary artist and filmmaker from Hamburg whose contemporary art practice draws on a wide range of cultural influences—from internet aesthetics to ancient mythology. In his work, DAVI.INweaves together symbols from antiquity and the present, transforming them into new visual worlds. He translates techniques such as acrylic and spray painting into pixel graphics, ultimately materializing them in knitted textiles. In doing so, he artfully combines one of the newest with one of the oldest technologies of image production.
