The figures in the pictorial world of Dimitris Tzamouranis (born 1967 in Kalamata, Greece) originate from his immediate surroundings. Their clothing, makeup, and hairstyles identify them as modern people of the 21st century. However, the artist captures them in many of his paintings in constellations that evoke familiar, historical, mythological, or religious themes in the viewer. Thus, "Soika and Eva" are found in the pose of a Pietà, "Dancers" is reminiscent of Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper, and the large-format painting "The Night" recalls Ferdinand Hodler's work of the same name. Tzamouranis uses art history as a field of inspiration, employs a familiar visual language, and thereby achieves a recognition effect in the viewer. He consciously uses this effect, plays with associations, and develops his pictorial world from this.
